Dental Trauma
Traumatic injury to the teeth and jaw are often stressful. Teeth can be loosened, dislodged or broken due to your injury. If you happen to suffer a traumatic injury to your teeth and jaw, please contact us immediately and we will endeavour to see you on the same day.
Prompt management of most forms of traumatic injury to your teeth will allow you to have the best possible outcome. If able, there are steps that you may take prior to seeing us to ensure that your teeth will have the best possible chance of being retained.
For teeth that are completely dislodged out of the mouth:
- Only adult teeth should be reinserted
- Quickly rinse the tooth with normal saline (if available) to remove gross contaminants on the surface without touching the root surface. If saline is not available, use clean water and keep the contact time with the water as minimal as possible.
- Reinsert the tooth back into the socket where the tooth was dislodged and contact us immediately
- If the tooth is a baby tooth, keep it in milk or cling wrap and contact us immediately
- Under no circumstances should the tooth be stored dry or in plain water
- If the tooth cannot be inserted back in the jaw, store it in plain milk, coconut water or normal saline and contact us immediately
For teeth that are loosened or broken:
- Locate the broken and dislodged fragments and store it in cling wrap or in water/milk
- Only adult teeth should be gently pushed back into position (if possible)
- Contact us immediately
