Root Canal Retreatment

Root Canal Retreatments can be successfully performed to improve an existing root canal treatment. Root canal treatments enjoy a high success rate and predictability when performed to a high standard. It has been shown through research that the success rate of root canal treatment at 10 years is at least equivalent or higher than that of teeth-replacement alternatives (e.g. implants and bridges).

However, there are various reasons why your initial root canal treatment may not be successful. This may be due to persistent infection inside the root canal space, cysts, granulomas or reinfection through a defective restoration or crack in the tooth. These teeth do not need to be immediately extracted. It is generally advisable to give your previously treated tooth a second chance through retreatment.

In most cases, an endodontist is able to remove the existing root filling and achieve comparable success rate to that of a well-performed initial treatment. Through the use of an operating microscope, advanced instruments and clinical expertise, an endodontist is often able to clean closer to the end of the root tips, achieve disinfection in areas not previously accessible (i.e. fins, isthmuses and lateral canals), and ensure that the problem does not reoccur.

Endodontists are experts in root canal retreatments, who are able to quickly recognise the subtle differences between teeth. This may include previously untreated nerves, resorptions, lateral canals, fins, isthmuses and previous procedural mishaps.
